What are Close-Coupled pumps?

Visual comparison

A close couple pump is directly connected; pump and motor are reliant on one shaft
The opposite of a close coupled pump configuration is a flexible coupled pump. The motor and pump have their own shafts connected together.

Close-coupled pumps have the advantage of straightforward installation because the shafts and casings need not be aligned.

When are close coupled pumps used ?

Close-coupled pumps are kept to small pump power outputs because the forces and movements in the pipelines have to be absorbed by a motor casing with cast-on or bolted-on feet. If the forces/vibrations become too much the pump could fail. These pumps are general purpose - they are not specialised

Alternatively there closely-related flanged motor pumps; these pumps are installed on pump feet instead of motor feet. A flanged motor pump can handle more pipeline vibrations. Thereby, it is able to output more power than a close-coupled pump.
